Your First Provisional Driving Licence

When You Can Apply

You can apply for your first provisional driving licence when you are 15 years and nine months old. You can start driving when you are:

  • 17 Years Old - If You Want to Drive a Car
  • 16 Years Old - If You Want to Ride a Moped or Light Quadbike

Your licence will detail when you can start driving different vehicles.

Replacing a Lost, Stolen, Damaged, or Destroyed Licence

If your licence has been lost, stolen, defaced, or destroyed, you must replace it immediately. The replacement is charged at £30, and you can apply for one via the government’s website.

To get your first provisional driving licence in Northern Ireland, you must:

  • Meet the Minimum Age Requirement
  • Meet the Minimum Eyesight Requirement
  • Not Be Prevented from Driving for Any Reason
  • Pay £62.50 by MasterCard™, Visa™, Electron, Maestro™, or Delta™ Debit or Credit Card
  • Have a Valid UK Passport or Other Form of Identity
  • Have Your National Insurance Number, If Known
  • Provide Addresses Where You’ve Lived over the Last Three Years
